Albania?

ALBANIA!!? is more progressive than the UK?? WTF is going on? Albania is one of the poverty-stricken Eastern European states that are just emerging from the dark ages (cf Poland), and they're STILL ahead of the UK on this!

Hang your collective heads parliamentary Labour Party and Stonewall…

and:

This law will surely pass, but not because the majority of Albanians support it but because people there just aren't politically active/engaged/organized enough to oppose it.

Alleged apathy aside, how nice - we can add this to the 'welcome surprises', next to South Africa and Iowa...

I hope that Denmark and Finland will legalise same-sex marriage next in Europe...

Love,
Epiphanie

It's amazing, isn't it, Morgan?!

Perhaps they're trying to be stand out from the other countries trying to get into the EU... Albania is far from progressive in general in regards to making its GLBTIQ citizens feel nourished by society, from what I've read (admittedly not much), so it's going to be really interesting to see how this new-found freedom will raise the visibility of and tolerance towards non-Heterosexuals in their society... If I were in Albania, I would start doing research on attitudes towards homosexuality now, and see how it progresses over, say, five years.

I think Albania will probably be the 8th country to legalise SSM, and I think Luxembourg might be the next! (Click here to read more.)

Three cheers for Albania!!! (Yeah, I guess I'm still shocked!)

Even if this is just positioning on the world stage, good for them for recognizing such a potent social issue. If only the U.S. would get the picture. One state at a time, I guess.
